New survey service evaluates facilities’ steam systems
Steam systems maintenance provider American Plant Maintenance has launched its steam trap survey service for processing facilities.
The surveys, which test and document the operational status of traps utilizing ultrasound and temperature differentials, can identify failing traps and issues affecting the delivery of thermal energy through the steam system, according to a news release.

Survey data is compiled in a detailed report which include a results synopsis and a return-on-investment calculation that compares replacement costs with losses associated with failed traps. The report also includes specific recommendations for trap and trap station improvements.
APM steam field technicians evaluate elements including isolation valves, inlet strainers, strainer blowdown valves, outlet check valves, trap station bypasses, test valves and sight glass flow indicators.
The survey includes documentation of trap location, application, steam pressure, manufacturer, model, and technology. Pipe size and trap size, connection type, inlet and outlet temperature and comments about existing installation are also documented.
