Grocery association names new VP of food safety

Grocery Manufacturers Association (GMA) president and CEO, Pamela Bailey, named George Dunaif as vice president of food safety and technical services.

“Product safety is the number one priority for GMA and its member companies,” Bailey said. “GMA has a world-class food safety practice, and I am certain that George Dunaif has the experience and leadership skills necessary to take GMA’s food safety and technical services to an even higher level of effectiveness.”

Dunaif most recently served as vice president, global food safety at Campbell Soup Co. In that role, he was responsible for the company’s worldwide food safety function, including toxicology, microbiology, process safety and analytical chemistry. He also served as vice-chairman of the Campbell Corporate Crisis Management Team.

While at Campbell Soup Co., Dunaif represented the company as a member of many international, national and state scientific, technical and trade organizations, including the Food Allergy Resource and Research Program, Institute of Food Technologists, Society of Toxicology, New Jersey State Commission on Cancer Research, New Jersey Poison Control Center and the FAO/WHO Codex Committee on Food Additives and Contaminants.

“I am honored to join the GMA team,” Dunaif said. “The association plays an important leadership role when it comes to food safety, and I look forward to working with the GMA staff and the experts at its member companies to improve food safety in the U.S. and around the globe.”

Dunaif received his Bachelor of Science degree in Nutrition and Foods from SUNY College at Buffalo, a Master of Science degree in Human Nutrition from Iowa State and his doctorate in toxicology, with minors in pharmacology and pathology, from Cornell University. He is a board certified toxicologist and a Diplomat of the American Board of Toxicology (DABT).

Dunaif will report to Leon Bruner, GMA senior vice president for scientific and regulatory affairs and chief science officer. He will begin his duties at GMA on August 15.
