Successful Cooperation Between Sunrise and Sormac

This piece originally ran in the November issue of Fresh Cut magazine as an advertorial sponsored by Sormac

Included in that model was a responsive processing arm that could deliver the efficiencies of processed items without the time delays incurred while acquiring those items from other sources. Sunrise Fresh Cuts is the in-house processing division co-located with Sunrise Produce. Together, the companies deliver daily, both fresh and fresh-cut fruits and vegetables.

The Fresh Cuts division incorporates just-in-time processing to deliver the freshest possible products to the end user. Custom cuts, packaging, and pack sizes are available to their customers. Products from the various product lines include staple items such as shredded lettuces, salad mixes, diced celery, carrots and onions to high-end, hand-turned vegetables and custom mixes.

Recently, Sunrise Fresh Cuts has completed a capital expansion project to increase both the capacity and the sophistication of the processing room to include the installation of a Sormac Pulstar Double Wash System for its leafy product line. As with any process, the industry standards and best practices (or in the food processing business, HACCPs and GMPs) continue to evolve. Sormac’s unique multi-stage, low velocity, high agitation wash protocols provide one of the industry’s most robust cleaning solutions and is an integral part of Sunrise Produce’s commitment to not only meet but exceed food safety standards.

Sormac Pulstar: Washers for Leafy Vegetables

Sormac designs and builds fruit and vegetable processing machines, for produce including potatoes, carrots, onions, leafy vegetables and gherkins. Its product range encompasses about forty different machines. Besides standard machines, Sormac also builds processing lines to customer specifications.

Machines for processing leafy vegetables are one of Sormac’s specialties. One of these is the Pulstar salad washer, which Sormac has supplied to Sunrise. The Pulstar is available with a processing capacity of between 1000 and 10,000 lbs/hr.

Pulstar salad washers are equipped with a unique, continuously adjustable air injection system which enables the turbulence to be set to the exact level to clean the product properly. Two sections which operate alternately guide the product through the washer with a peristaltic movement. The duration of the washing process can therefore be accurately programmed. A clever water injection system on the infeed side of the washer ensures that the salad moves evenly across the entire width of the washing basin. The washing water is collected, cleaned and reused.

Centrifuge SC-740
Sormac also produces a centrifuge for drying salad leaves after the washing process: the SC-740, which has recently been updated. This machine has modified suspension which makes it even more stable than before. It also uses a brand new blasting technique which cleans the drum thoroughly after every drying cycle.
