Study links trans fats with aggression

Feeling more aggressive lately?

You might be able to blame it on your doughnuts.

A newly published study by the University of California San Diego sought to determine if dietary trans fatty acids are associated with aggression and irritability.

Approximately 950 men and women participated in a dietary survey associated with the study, and researchers concluded that greater intake of dTFA was “significantly” associated with greater aggression. The results transcended genders, age and ethnicity, with “dTFA more consistently predictive than other assessed aggression predictors,” according to the study.

“dTFA showed a significant association to behaviors that have unfavorable repercussions to others,” researchers concluded.

While prior research had shown an association between intake of dTFA and depression, they added, “This is the first study to show a connection of dTFA to aggression.”
