Next-generation defect removal system from Key to debut at May show

A next-generation potato strip defect removal system from Key Technology will debut at packaging trade show Interpack, set for May 7-13 in Dusseldorf, Germany.

ADR X builds on the technology of Key’s ADR systems, which identify defects on wet potato strips and trim the affected areas to preserve usable product, increase yield and maximize profitability. ADR X, featuring enhanced sensors and updated design, aligns, separates, inspects and trims both peeled and peel-on wet potato strips of various cut sizes, according to a news release.

Key is a member of Duravant’s Food Sorting and Handling Group.

“Potato quality isn’t consistent, but processors still need consistent results,” said Jack Lee, president of Duravant’s Food Sorting and Handling Group. “Meanwhile, the gap between variability in raw material and customer expectations for the finished product keeps widening. At the same time, hygiene requirements are greater, skilled labor is harder to find and facilities are running longer production cycles.

“As the long-time leader in automatic defect removal technology, Key redesigned its popular ADR system from the ground up with the new ADR X to address these mounting pressures.”

New ADR X capabilities include multi-channel sensing with advanced LED lighting and strobing for accurate identification of product defects such as green discoloration, according to the release. The machine’s new design maximizes hygienic operation in wet processing environments, eliminating activity above the product and reducing flat. Bearings and other easily accessible key components enable clean-in-place functionality.

ADR X features recipe-driven conveying and alignment mechanics that automatically adjust based on the selected cut size. Lane profiles and strip positioning are set via a user interface, allowing the system to respond to different strip dimensions without manual tuning and supporting repeatable performance. Reinforced belts reduce belt stretch, eliminate the need for in-field welding and allow belt replacement to be completed up to five times faster, according to the release.

ADR X fits within a standard shipping container, the company said, and can be installed in existing ADR 5 systems without significant changes.
