Growers Ice Co.’s $250M redevelopment on track for 2026 completion

The $250 million redevelopment of Growers Ice Co.’s 28-acre campus in Salinas, California, into a 400,000-square-foot facility with dedicated space for the handling of organic produce is expected to be complete in early 2026.

The pre-cooling and cold-storage facility is undergoing a redevelopment and expansion from its previous 200,000-square-foot production facility, which processed more than 2,000 tons of produce per day and more than 30 million cartons each year.

The property’s pre-cooling and cold storage facilities are leased to various companies, including largest tenant Central Coast Cooling.

“We are definitely on track to open in 2026,” GIC CEO Jim White told Organic Produce Network.

White said the facility will utilize alternative energy sources as well as the latest water conservation and efficiency technologies.

GIC has served the fresh produce industry in the Salinas Valley since its founding in 1936.

Last December, in preparation for the management of the redeveloped GIC campus, Post Harvest Technologies announced a January 2023 merger of two of its portfolio companies: Growers Custom Equipment, headquartered in Yuma, Arizona, and Salinas-based Facilities Management Group.
