Fresh vs. frozen in school snack programs debate heats up in Florida

The Sun-Sentinel of Fort Lauderdale, Fla., reports that Florida has entered the fresh vs. frozen food fight in Congress that pits promoters of fresh fruit and vegetables in school snack programs against producers of canned, dried and frozen foods.

According to the Sun-Sentinel report, Florida growers are urging Congress to keep the snack program fresh. However, some members of Congress have added a provision to a farm bill passed by the House Agriculture Committee that would add frozen, canned and dried goods to the Fresh Fruit and Vegetable Program.
