California Screamin’ Over Fruit Fumigant

Environmentalists and the State of California’s own scientists say the use of methyl iodide on the state’s fruit crops is unsafe for workers and a danger to public health. Nonetheless, the California Department of Pesticide Regulation has proposed allowing the fumigant to prevent crop disease and repel insects. A public-comment period ended last week, and a decision is expected in a few months. Slate’s The Big Money
