Ontario Greenhouses Damaged by June 6 Tornado

Several Ontario vegetable greenhouses were destroyed or damaged in the wake of a tornado that hit the Leamington, Ontario, area early Sunday morning, June 6, according to the Ontario Greenhouse Vegetable Growers (OGVG).

OGVG is  working with producers to assess damage, although preliminary estimates are showing that a small amount of acreage has been completely destroyed and others are damaged. Provincially, OGVG represents more than 1,820 acres of greenhouses.

OGVG will be working with government officials to help facilitate affected producer needs and will provide support to them during this time, according to the association.

“We are keeping our members in our thoughts during this difficult time and will be working with those affected to ensure a smooth rebuilding process,” said George Gilvesy, general manager.  “There is some damage to the affected greenhouses but our growers are resilient and have been working through the damages. We are just very thankful there were no injuries.”
