Neogen develops quick test for salmonella

Lansing, Mich.-based Neogen Corporation has developed a quick and easy test system to detect pathogen DNA in food and environmental samples.

Neogen’s ANSR for salmonella, introduced at last week’s joint gathering of the Food Marketing Institute, American Meat Institute, United Fresh and National Association of State Departments of Agriculture in Dallas, is the first pathogen test developed for the system and can provide results after 10 minutes of reaction time – that’s in contrast to most other commercially available molecular amplification tests, which require up to three hours of reaction time, according to the company. Unlike older molecular technologies, ANSR requires only a single reaction temperature. That eliminates time-consuming heating and cooling cycles characteristic of the 20-year-old polymerase chain reaction methods.

“ANSR proves the food industry both the DNA-definitive test results they need, and the much easier and quicker methodology they want,” said James Herbert, Neogen’s CEO and chairman. “Recent food recalls have emphasized the point that the food industry needs easier, quicker and more precise pathogen tests to lessen the chance that contaminated food products ever reach the consumer.”

Additional applications for the ANSR platform are in development for other pathogens including listeria.
