More fruit, less smoke: Study shows eating more produce can help quit smoking

Eating more fruits and vegetables may help people quit smoking and stay tobacco-free longer.

That's according to a paper from the University of Buffalo's School of Public Health and Health Professions published in the journal Nicotine and Tobacco Research.

After surveying 1,000 smokers 25 and older from around the U.S., the researchers concluded that smokers who consumed the most fruits and vegetables were three times more likely to be tobacco-free than those consuming the lowest amount of fresh produce.

The study also found that smokers with higher fruit and vegetable consumption smoked fewer cigarettes per day, waited longer to smoke their first cigarette each day and scored lower on a common test of nicotine dependence.
