Gills Onions Recall Announced

Oxnard, Calif.-based Gills Onions is recalling one lot of diced yellow onions after a Listeria monocytogenes finding. The finding came as part of a routine test conducted by the Washington State Department of Agriculture, and the company is working with state and federal officials to determine the cause of the contamination.

The retail packs were sold under the Trader Joe’s brand in 10-ounce bags and distributed in Arizona, California, Nevada, New Mexico, Oregon and Washington. The lot number for the recalled onions is 2017-R and the packages have a best-if-used-by date of June 16.

Foodservice customers may also have received onions from the affected lot. They were sold in cartons of four 5-pound bags under the Gills Onion label and Sysco Natural brand. The foodservice products have the same lot code and use-by date as the retail products.

”Although no illnesses have been reported and only one 10-ounce retail bag of diced onions tested positive, we want to be sure that all diced products associated with the production lot are accounted for,” said Nelia Alamo, vice president of marketing for Gills Onions. “We are committed to food safety at all levels and we will always put our customers and our consumer first.”
