Fresh Express honors Earth Day with revitalized sustainability pledge

Fresh Express has revitalized its sustainability initiative and released a new consumer social media awareness campaign in recognition of Earth Day 2022.

The company’s renewed pledge aims to transition to more renewable energy; zero waste to landfills through a reduction in the amount of materials coming into and being generated at the facility level; investment in reusable containers and working with leading recycling companies to identify new opportunities to recycle metal, corrugate, wood, plastic, produce waste and more.

“At Fresh Express, we strive to preserve a healthy world for future generations through resource conservation and responsible business practices,” said Fresh Express President John P. Olivo in a news release.

For consumers, Fresh Express is reaching out through all social media venues to bring awareness to the conservation efforts made by growers and farmers, the stewards of the land, to call attention to the importance of recycling and the new recycle symbol now prominently displayed on all Fresh Express packaging and to celebrate Earth Day with a custom chef-developed vegetable and grain salad bowl.

According to Olivo, the company has embraced sustainability practices across its national network to positively contribute to the earth’s environment in all growing, processing, packaging and shipping practices.

Together with Fresh Express farming partners throughout the U.S. and Mexico, the company is proactively supporting implementation efforts to rebuild the soil, conserve water and boost productivity using less land. Enhanced farming techniques and best practices include, for example, no-tillage, crop rotation, soil and water retention, drought-resilient seeds and other means to conserve and build the health of the soil ecosystem.

“Fresh Express is developing and leading standards for high-density planting – a technically challenging practice proven to increase yields, reduce growing costs and make more efficient use of land and water,” Olivo said. “These growing and irrigation practices have been improved to produce 30% more food on the same plot of land with 30% reduction of water use.”

The consumer outreach campaign kicks off on Earth Day, April 22. Consumers are invited to visit the Fresh Express website for more information and to obtain the recipe for the Fresh Express Earth Day Vegetable and Grain Salad Bowl specially created by the company’s chef, Dot Vartan.
