Fans vote in health food at Grand Rapids ballpark

Fifth Third Ballpark, home of the Michigan Whitecaps minor league baseball team, uses food as a way to promote the ballpark. In 2009, the park introduced a 5,000 calorie, four-pound hamburger that was featured on an episode of Man Vs. Food on the Travel Channel.

For the 2011 baseball season, the ballpark gave fans a chance to vote on the next menu item, and they selected “Chicks with Sticks,” a selection of fresh-cut vegetables with a hummus or ranch dressing side. The underdog healthy menu item beat out the favorite “Walking Spaghetti,” a 16-inch loaf of garlic bread filled with spaghetti, meatballs, a quart of marina sauce and a pound of cheese – for 5,600 calories.
