Costco Recalls Baby Carrots in Canada

Costco announced a voluntary recall of baby carrots sold at its stores in five Canadian provinces because they may be contaminated with Shigella, according to the Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA).

The baby carrots are a product of Mexico, but imported and sold under the Los Angeles Salad Company name. CFIA also warned the public to avoid baby carrots sold by the company.

The affected product, Los Angeles Salad Company Genuine Sweet Baby Carrots, is sold in 1.5 lb plastic bags with the codes ITM 50325, UPC 8-31129-00137-7 and a sell by date up to and including Aug. 13.

The baby carrots were sold in Costco stores in Manitoba, British Columbia, Alberta, Ontario, Quebec and Newfoundland.

So far there have been four reported illnesses associated with the consumption of this product.

Shigella infection can cause diarrhea, fever, nausea and vomiting. Illness usually lasts from 4 to 14 days. Infection can occur after eating food or drinking water that is contaminated with Shigella, and the bacteria can be passed from person to person.
