CDC: Jimmy John’s sprouts outbreak illnesses total 29

A final report on the E. coli outbreak associated with eating raw clover sprouts at Jimmy John’s restaurants has been released by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

The CDC reports that a total of 29 people in 11 states were infected with the outbreak strain – that’s up from 25 cited in the CDC’s last update March 8. The new total reflects four additional cases in Michigan, Pennsylvania, Washington and West Virginia. Of 27 who provided information, 85 percent reported consuming sprouts at Jimmy John’s restaurants in the seven days preceding illness.

Dates of onset ranged from Dec. 25, 2011, to March 3, 2012. Those who were sickened range in age from 9 to 57; 85 percent are female. While seven were hospitalized, no deaths were reported.
