Biopesticide uses chitosan to fight pests in tree nuts, citrus and grapes

A biopesticide from Tidal Grow AgriScience formulated for use with tree nuts, citrus crops, and all grape varieties is now available in California, bringing a new active ingredient and modes of action to specialty crop growers in the region.

Tidal Grow Spectra, with active ingredient chitosan, aids in the control of diseases and pests while boosting plant vigor, according to a news release.

“Chitosan is a powerful active ingredient that is bio-based, yet requires precise bioengineering to deliver specific results, and we’re thrilled the California DPR has approved its use,” Galynn Beer, Tidal Grow AgriScience vice president of global sales, said in the release.

“By equipping growers with reliable chitosan-based technologies, we’re helping drive profitability by improving efficacy of existing IPM strategies, all while empowering the growth of sustainable, high-performing agricultural systems.”

Spectra activates natural defenses within the crop’s immune system to help combat abiotic stressors, according to the company. Additionally, as a bioactive fungicide, bactericide and nematicide, it offers improved performance in combatting pests and pathogens when used with conventional programs.

Spectra directly controls pest and pathogens including almond blossom blight, shot hole, walnut mites and powdery mildew, according to the release.
