The U.S. Food and Drug Administration will conduct a cucumber sampling assignment targeting salmonella during the next few months.
The sampling, expected to take place at the retail and distribution supply chain level and at ports of through September, will affect both domestic and foreign whole fresh cucumbers.
The FDA said multiple salmonella outbreaks between 2012 and 2025 spurred the sampling.
“The FDA has carefully considered recent public health data, prior sampling assignment results, and historical outbreak patterns in developing this assignment, reflecting the agency’s commitment to adaptive surveillance that responds to food safety challenges,” according to a statement on the FDA website.
The assignment aims to prevent the introduction of contaminated food into U.S. commerce, remove contaminated food from the U.S. food supply and identify trends and strategies for prevention and risk mitigation, according to FDA.
In 2025, a salmonella outbreak sickened 69 people in 21 states.
