Produce processors face food safety concerns post-hurricane Helene
Hurricane Helene has significantly disrupted Georgia’s agriculture, including fruit and vegetable processing.
In a recent email, the Georgia Fruit and Vegetable Growers Association (GFVGA) notified members that staff will be on-site with impacted processors in the hardest-hit areas starting tomorrow to evaluate damage and offer support. Additionally, this data will be critical to disaster relief efforts. You can locate your local office by clicking here.
Food safety assistance
In the wake of the storm, food safety is a top priority. GFVGA encourages processors to consult Produce Food Safety Services (PFSS) for assistance with safety issues. The PFSS team, led by Beth Oleson, can be reached directly at 706-407-2551.
Cleanup guidelines
Processors are reminded to follow USDA guidelines for debris removal, ensuring no new ground disturbance. Proper documentation of damage through photos, GPS points, and descriptions is highly recommended to support relief efforts.
Relief and conservation aid
The USDA’s Emergency Conservation Program (ECP) may help processors repair storm damage and implement water conservation methods. Eligibility for ECP funding requires that damage significantly impacts land productivity or presents an unusual challenge for the area. Learn more about enrolling in the ECP here.
For further assistance, processors can reach the USDA Farm Service Agency at 706-546-2266. Many FSA Service Centers in Georgia are closed due to storm damage, but staff is available to answer calls at those closed centers. USDA Farm Service Agency in Georgia is available by phone 706-546-2266.
