Veg Pro Expands with New Fresh-Cut Plant

Veg Pro International has completed an $11-million plant for salad mix and cut vegetable production in Sherrington, Montreal, Canada.

The new plant replaces Veg Pro’s Napierville facility, which was destroyed in a fire about a year ago.

The 55,000-square-foot facility will operate year-round, handling lettuce and other fresh vegetables produced from May to November by the Van Winden Group and its five associated farms, with annual sales totalling $65 million.

”This is a happy day for Veg Pro International and the entire team,” said Gerry Van Winden, son of a vegetable producer. “We worked hard to build a leading-edge plant with efficient equipment and new technologies that was designed according to the highest sanitation standards in the industry. We are very proud of what we have accomplished.”

Veg Pro specializes in the growing and processing of “baby” lettuce and spinach, which are sold pre-washed.

The firm is one of the few companies to produce mesclun in Quebec. Several of Veg Pro’s products, such as mesclun mix and spinach, are sold in fully recyclable trays in the refrigerated counter of vegetable departments in Quebec’s major food chains.
