Archer Daniels Midland rolls out Fruit Up sweetener

Archer Daniels Midland (ADM) recently launched Fruit Up in North America to provide food, drink and snack developers with a new option to add sweetness from fruit to their latest food innovations. This low-glycemic and non-GMO ingredient is an alternative for clean-label foods and drinks.

“Fruit Up gives formulators a great option to meet consumer demand for natural sources of sweetness, such as fruit syrups and honey, which are recognizable ingredients,” said Mukul Juneja, director, product experience marketing, ADM’s WILD Flavors & Specialty Ingredients business unit.

ADM’s Fruit Up is produced by a purely physical extraction process from various fruits without the use of enzymes or chemical additives. The resulting fruit syrup can be used in sweet alcoholic drinks and mixers, sports drinks, bars, baked goods, confections, sauces, dressings, frozen desserts and many other applications. Fruit Up’s sweet taste and neutral flavor enable product developers to sweeten a variety of food and beverage products, reduce added sugar and round out overall flavor and mouthfeel, according to ADM. Additionally, Fruit Up can help craft desired texture attributes in frozen desserts.

A recent study of consumers through ADM’s OutsideVoice platform resulted in an overwhelmingly positive consumer sentiment toward the term “fruit syrup.” Research also suggests that slow energy-release foods and beverages are becoming increasingly popular with consumers. Low glycemic index (GI) foods are key to provide the benefit of stable and sustained energy. Based on multiple independent scientific studies, Fruit Up has a proven low GI value of less than 55, meaning consumption of Fruit Up results in only moderate changes of the normal blood glucose level following its consumption, helping consumers maintain a more constant blood glucose level for a longer time period.
