NASA using PEAKfresh produce bags in orbit

The National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) has used PEAKfresh produce bags on its latest resupply mission via SpaceX CRS-14. The launch successfully took place Monday, April 2, 2018 at Cape Canaveral Air Force Station and will be delivering supplies and equipment to the International Space Station (ISS).

The PEAKfresh bags being used by NASA are the same produce bags available in local markets nationwide and online U.S. retailers. Each bag measures 12 inches by 16 inches and is being used by NASA to store fruit and vegetables such as oranges, apples, carrots and tomatoes. Prior to launch, the produce was washed, air-dried, placed in the bags and then stored in the capsule. Once arriving at the ISS, the produce will remain in the produce bags until eaten.

PEAKfresh is modified atmosphere packaging made specifically for produce. Specifically, these bags use a naturally occurring mineral that extracts ethylene gas – the agent that causes produce to ripen and ultimately spoil. By reducing ethylene gas, the company said its bags can extend the freshness and life of produce for up to two to three times normal shelf life.
