Food safety in leafy greans: Arizona offers food safety poster

The Arizona Leafy Greens Food Safety Committee has created a new, laminated food safety poster to be used for training in the field – literally.

In both English and Spanish, the poster addresses 15 rules to follow in the field.

“There are often times when impromptu, and even scheduled trainings are done in the field, and these tools are ideal to use for what we call in the industry ‘tailgate meetings’ on the back of a truck,” said Vicki-Lynne Scott, technical subcommittee chairperson and board member of the Arizona Leafy Greens Food Safety Committee.

Available for $35, the laminated posters come with electronic versions for reproduction and the comprehensive Food Safety Training Kit.

“This is a valuable tool that can be used as a quick overview before workers come into contact with any produce,” said Scott. “It’s an ideal complement to the more comprehensive Food Safety Training Program, allowing field managers to be able to provide a quick overview for workers that may be new to the environment and until they are able to cover all the modules in the larger program.”

The Arizona Leafy Greens Food Safety Program was developed in 2010 in answer to findings in third-party audits that most of the infractions in leafy greens handling occur at the field level. The uniform application of the lessons in the multi-cultural program makes it possible for every employee in the industry to receive the same basic food safety training.

The program was recognized in 2011 as one of five “best new food safety solution” finalists in the United Fresh 2011 New Product Award Competition.

Kits can be ordered by downloading a public information request form at http://www.arizonaleafygreens.org/wp-content/uploads/2011/10/BROCHURE-INSERTfinal.pdf or by calling 602-542-0945.
