Center for Produce Safety summer symposium series lineup announced

Most of the Center for Produce Safety’s summer research symposium agenda has been announced.

The free sessions will be presented by CPS-funded scientists and include the latest food safety news and research. The series will take place 10 a.m. to noon Pacific time Tuesdays June 22 through July 13. The lineup is as follows:

Session I: June 22

  • Simulation analysis of in-field produce sampling for risk-based sampling plan. With Matthew Stasiewicz, Ph.D., University of Illinois
  • Significance of sanitizers on induction of viable but non-cultivable (VNBC) foodborne bacteria and their survival and resuscitation in fresh produce. With Ana Allende, Ph.D., CEBAS-CSIC Spain
  • Non-fouling food contact surfaces — prevention of biofilm and surface-mediated cross-contamination. With Boce Zhang, Ph.D. University of Massachusetts
  • Featured session, TBA. Moderator: Suresh DeCosta, Lipman Family Farms

Session II: June 29

  • Listeria monocytogenes growth potential, kinetics and factors affecting its persistence on a broad range of fresh produce. With Xiangwu Nou, Ph.D., USDA ARS Beltsville
  • Factors affecting persistence of Listeria monocytogenes need to be identified for evaluation and prioritization of interventions. With Martin Wiedmann, Ph.D., Cornell University
  • Listeria develops reduced sanitizer sensitivity but not resistance at recommended sanitizer use levels. With Martin Wiedmann, Ph.D., Cornell University
  • Fate of different listeria strains on different whole apple varieties during long-term simulated commercial storage. With Elliot Ryser, Ph.D., Michigan State University
  • Featured session, TBA. Moderator: Joan Rosen, JC Rosen Resources

Session III: July 6

  • Analysis of the presence of cyclospora in waters of the Mid-Atlantic states and evaluation of removal and inactivation by filtration. With Kalmia Kniel, Ph.D., University of Delaware
  • Illuminating the role of whole genome sequencing in produce safety. With Kerry Cooper, Ph.D., University of Arizona
  • Investigation of potential pre- and post-harvest treatments targeting salmonella risk reduction on peaches in Australia. With Kim-Yen Phan-Thien, Ph.D., University of Sydney
  • Environmental microbial risks associated with vented produce in distribution centers. With Laurel Dunn, Ph.D., University of Georgia
  • Featured session, TBA. Moderator: Jennifer McEntire, United Fresh Produce Association

Session IV: July 13

  • Toward a decision-support tool for identifying and mitigating on-farm risks to food safety. With Daniel Karp, Ph.D., University of California, Davis
  • Development of a model to predict the impact of sediments on microbial irrigation water quality. With Charles Gerba, Ph.D., University of Arizona
  • Agriculture water treatment for the Southwest region. With Channah Rock, Ph.D., University of Arizona
  • Featured session, TBA. Moderator: De Ann Davis, Western Growers
