U.S., Europe partners in food safety

Food safety efforts are moving forward with the July 2 announcement that FDA and the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) have signed a cooperation agreement. This is the first international cooperation agreement EFSA has signed and it will facilitate the sharing of confidential scientific information and other food safety methodologies, according to FDA.

”As a science-based and science-led agency, FDA recognizes that scientific cooperation is vital for the success of its mission, which is to provide the best possible health protection for the public,” said Andrew C. von Eschenbach, FDA’s commissioner. “I welcome this opportunity for scientific exchanges with our European colleagues – exchanges that will be focused on ensuring the safety and wholesomeness of food, a major area of responsibility of our agency.”

The agencies have already been working together, but the formal agreement solidifies the legal frameworks and will extend the partnership for future programs.
