IARW publishes guide to injury, illness prevention

The International Association of Refrigerated Warehouses (IARW) has published the Guide to Injury and Illness Prevention Programs. Developed by the IARW Safety Committee, the new reference guide details employee safety requirements by state and also can be used to develop corporate safety programs.

“This important industry resource is intended to help cold chain industry companies understand requirements for state-run injury and illness prevention programs; workers' compensation premiums, which list possible premium discounts based on various state requirements; and state drug-free workplace polices and drug testing requirements,” said the guide’s co-author Jim Marrella, president of J.C. Marrella & Associates, and the vice chairman of the IARW Safety Committee.

The document was co-authored by Marrella and Bill Vargo, director of risk management, Nordic Logistics and Warehousing. Annamarie Gibbs, manager, risk control services with the Lockton Companies and Ken Hudson, chairman of the IARW safety committee and vice president of environmental health & safety at Lineage Logistics also contributed to the report. Members of the IARW Safety Committee reviewed the report. A full committee roster can be viewed at http://www.gcca.org/leadership/learn-about-gcca-committees/.

The guide was developed to be as user-friendly and manipulative as possible. The guide is available as PDF report, which is ideal for printing out information on individual states. It is also available as a MS Excel file to allow easy sorting and a complete view of nationwide requirements. Both versions contain links to state government websites where users can learn more about state requirements.

Members can download the guide. The guide is also available for sale in the online store for nonmembers for $75 from the IARW store site

IARW is a core partner of the Global Cold Chain Alliance (GCCA), which represents all major industries engaged in temperature-controlled logistics.
