FDA names Indiana farm in Midwest cantaloupe outbreak

The FDA has identified Chamberlain Farms of Owensville, Ind., as the possible source of contaminated cantaloupes suspected in a multi-state outbreak of salmonella.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention is reporting that 178 people have been infected with the outbreak strain of Salmonella Typhimurium from 21 states. Nationwide, 62 have been hospitalized and in Kentucky, two deaths have been reported.

Records reflect that the cantaloupe was initially shipped to Indiana, Kentucky, Missouri, Tennessee, Ohio, Illinois and Wisconsin, though further shipment was likely, FDA said.

The FDA is urging consumers anywhere who are buying or have recently purchase cantaloupes to ask retailers if the cantaloupe was grown on Chamberlain Farms.

The investigation into the outbreak continues as FDA determines whether there are other possible sources. In the meantime, consumers who may have the product are advised to throw it out.
