FDA confirms Indiana farm as source of cantaloupe contamination

The FDA has confirmed that samples of cantaloupe collected at Chamberlain Farms in Owensville, Ind., match the DNA of a strain of salmonella that has sickened 178 people in 21 states.

In August, FDA investigators collected samples from surface areas at the farm as well as from cantaloupe at Chamberlain Farms, but was waiting for results. The farm also initiated a voluntary recall of its cantaloupe and stopped distributing for the duration of the growing season. Distribution had taken place in Indiana, Iowa, Kentucky, Missouri, Tennessee, Ohio, Illinois and Wisconsin, though expanded shipment was likely.

So far, 62 have been  hospitalized and two deaths were reported in Kentucky. FDA says the investigation continues.
